The research conducted included a representative sample of 575 parents with young children and observation of 35 children from 3 to 7 years. The researchers wanted to know what digital media, children this age use, how exactly they do it and how parents deal with the online behavior of their children.

The main conclusions from this study are:

    • Dutch children are increasingly using the Internet.
As many as 78 percent of preschool children is already online and takes about 22 minutes a day on computer, laptop or iPad.

    • Ninety percent of parents let children play with digital media.
The Dutch saw an average of 3.7 different types of devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles in the house so it is not surprising that children can quickly come into contact with it. 90% of parents have no problem with their infant or toddler play with these digital devices.

    • Five percent of the children were not yet one year old when she went online.
While a child in the Netherlands averaged about 4 years as their first time go online, there were 5% of children who were using the web even before 4 years old. Especially children of educated parents.

    • Touchscreens are popular with children.
Devices with a touchscreen like iPhone or iPad appear to be well received in preschool children. Intuitively, they know the way and they understand the symbols used. Apps are popular because of the varying nature of the app that can be used as a book, movie or game.

    • Digital media are sometimes used as a sop.
Parents let kids play with digital devices because their children like it, some of the children can learn them and learn to deal with digital media. The role of this media is clearly to keep the child busy.

    • A conscious media education and counseling is definitely needed.
The researchers recommend the games and movies that children use to connect their experiences and level of development. Make conscious choices in media education. Young children need explanations and explore media in this age and prefer to cooperate with their parents. It is advised therefore not sop apps to use, but you and your child can to play together.

    • Let them enjoy in moderation.
There is more to the world than digital devices. Ensure that children have time to use other senses and develop motor skills. Excessive use of media keeps kids 'caught', making them lose on some experiences and impressions that are important for healthy development.
